World Tea Organization (WTeaO.org) Advisory Board President Mildred Dresselhaus accepted the UNESCO Medal on behalf of MIT

MIT has been honored with the UNESCO Medal for contributions to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The awards ceremony was held on Oct. 11 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. World Tea Organization Advisory Board President, Nanoscience pioneer and MIT Institute Professor Mildred Dresselhaus (Millie) accepted the medal on behalf of the Institute. Before this award, Millie had been awarded the L’Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science on her own behalf, being recognized as one of the five most distinguished female scientists in the world.

 

Prof. Dresselhaus is World Tea Organization Advisory Board President, and she is also the Institute Professor of MIT. She has served as President of the American Physical Society, Treasurer of the National Academy of Sciences, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, chair of the U.S. National Academy Decadal Study of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, and on many advisory committees and councils.  She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society etc. Prof. Dresselhaus has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. National Medal of Science, the Fermi Award, the Kavli Prize, and 33 honorary doctorates worldwide.

 

Established in 2010, the UNESCO Medal is an initiative of the International Commission responsible for developing the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems theme on nanoscience and nanotechnologies. Each year, the medal recognizes those making significant contributions in the field in an effort to showcase the tremendous benefits of progress being made. This year MIT shares the distinction, along with St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies in Russia, of being the first organization to be recognized. In addition to the two universities, four eminent scientists from Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, were recipients of the medal.

世界茶叶组织总顾问Millie院士再次领取联合国教科文组织奖章

因在纳米科学与技术发展领域作出贡献,麻省理工学院荣获联合国教科文组织奖章。10 月 11 日在法国巴黎的教科文组织总部举行了颁奖典礼。世界茶叶组织总顾问、纳米科学先驱、麻省理工学院镇院教授Millie院士代表学院接受了颁奖。此前,她本人还获得了联合国教科文组织颁发的女性科学家奖,被认为是世界上五个最杰出的女科学家之一。在科学界盛传的说法是;“一个诺贝尔奖获得者通常一声开创一个领域,Millie院士每十年开创一个”。

Millie院士是MIT镇院教授,世界茶叶组织(WTeaO.org)总顾问,她还担任过美国物理学会主席,美国科学促进会会长,美国科学院财务长,“科学”杂志主编等诸多顶尖职位。她是美国科学院院士,美国工程院院士,美国艺术与科学院院士,美国哲学会成员,获得过众多奖项,包括总统自由勋章,国家科学奖章,费米奖和卡夫李奖等最高奖项,同时她还拥有遍布世界的33个荣誉博士学位。

教科文组织奖章设立于2010年,是由负责发展《生命保障系统百科全书》纳米科学与技术主题的国际委员会发起的。这个奖项每年颁发给那些在本领域做出杰出贡献的团体和个人,力图展现他们的科研进展所带来的巨大利益。今年,麻省理工学院与俄罗斯圣彼得堡国家信息技术大学作为第一个获奖团体,共同分享了这一荣誉。除此之外,还有来自韩国、 阿拉伯联合酋长国、 乌克兰和英国的四位杰出科学家被授予奖章。
