Introduction: Tea and the Song Dynasty Society: revision, which is compiled by Shen Dongmei, trying to understand Chinese tea culture from the process of historical development by investigating and studying of the rich and complicated tea culture phenomenon in the Song Dynasty and making comparison of tea culture phenomenon of different times, so as to clarify the important connecting role of the Song Dynasty’s powdered tea ceremony in the history of Chinese tea culture. By carefully following the leading tea ceremony as the main line to illustrate the Song Dynasty tea culture, this book shows us a variety of tea drinking ways in different areas and the leading tea ceremony of the Song Dynasty, including their changes in different periods. It also gives us a general picture of the Song Dynasty tea culture which is close to the historical truth.

Past studies on tea in the Song Dynasty was mainly focused on tea economy. The relationship between tea and politics, social life, religion and culture of the Song Dynasty, and the Sino-foreign communications were less studied. This book made a historical comparison of the Song Dynasty tea culture such as tea plucking customs, production procedures, storage methods, dian-cha(tea whisking) process, fen-cha(tea foam art) and dou-cha(tea competition) methods, tea sets and series, etc. It also carried out a detailed research and analysis on the political implications of tribute tea and royal rewarding tea, the Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges, the tea notions, tea books, tea paintings and literatures and so on in the Song Dynasty. Based on the present achievements, this book studied on the Song Dynasty tea culture but not confined to it. A lot of tea culture phenomenon was discussed through the lens of the ancient and modern in this book.

以往宋代茶研究多集中於茶經濟方面,對於茶與宋代政治、社會生活、宗教文化、中外交往關注較少,本書另闢蹊徑,對宋代茶藝如採茶習俗、生產過程、保藏方法、點茶程式、分茶和鬥茶技藝、茶具形制和系列等做了歷史比較;對宋代貢茶和賜茶的政治意蘊、茶與中外文化交流、宋人茶觀念、宋代茶書、茶與宋代詩詞書畫等都進行了細緻的考辨和剖析。全書詳參古今成果,以宋代為範圍又不囿于宋代,對不少茶文化現象,都有縱貫古今的論述。
