Prof. Zhonghua Liu Received His Second National Science and Technology Progress Award
Congratulations to Prof. Zhonghua Liu, Advisory Board Member of the World Tea Organization (WTeaO.org), for receiving his second National Science and Technology Progress Award, the only one in Chinese tea industry who had received such great honors.
Congratulations to WTeaO.org Board Advisor Prof. Liu Zhonghua for being recommended as the only candidate in the tea society to become a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering for 2017.
On January 9, 2017, the National Science and Technology Awards ceremony was held in Beijing. The project Key Technological Innovations and Industrial Applications of Dark Tea’s Quality and Efficiency Improvement was recognized as the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. This project was led by Zhonghua Liu, Zhongwang Zhou, Jianan Huang, Haoren Wu and other experts, and the main research teams were Hunan Agricultural University and Hunan Tea Industry Group. His project “The new extraction technology of functional tea components and its industrialization” won the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2008.
This is the second National Science and Technology Progress Award which is led by Prof. Liu. The achievement has a great practical significance and historical landmark to Hunan dark tea and the development of dark tea industry in the country. First, the three big technology innovations of this project led dark tea to a new development era. Second, the project has significant economic and social benefits, which is an important technology support role for enhancing comprehensive competitiveness of dark tea industry and implementing national precision poverty alleviation strategy. Last, this project is an outstanding technology innovation and high degree of transformation, has strong demonstration, radiation and diffusion capacity. It plays a crucial role in promoting to enhance the overall technology, market competition and system innovation capacity of dark tea production, and to improve the adjustment, optimization, upgrade of dark tea industry structure and the products update.

Prof. Zhonghua Liu has made outstanding achievements in Chemistry of Tea Functional Components, Theory and Technology of Tea Processing, Deep Processing and Comprehensive Utilization of Tea, Using Technology of Characteristic Plants’ Function Components and related fields. He presided over more than 30 major programs of national, provincial and ministerial of China, such as National 973 Program, National Key Technology R&D Program/Tackle-key-problem Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Business Public Program by Ministry of Agriculture and National 948 Program, International S&T Cooperation Program, Key S&T Program by Ministry of Finance, Major S&T Special Program of Hunan Province, etc. In addition, he won the second prize of China National S&T Progress Award twice, appeared in the “New Century Talent Supporting Project by Ministry of Education” and “New Century Talents Project of China”.
Prof. Liu is a renowned Chinese expert on tea science and plant resources deep development. For years, he applied the related results and innovation technologies of Tea and Characteristic Plants’ activity components development to more than 50 enterprises in Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Sichuan, Chongqing and Anhui provinces, made significant economic benefits. It plays an important role in promoting the Chinese industry of tea deep processing and industry of plant extracts occupy core status in the international market.
